100in1day Hamilton 2017: SPN Events

SMALL ACTIONS. BIG CHANGE.

What if hundreds of people united together, each taking one small action to improve their city, all on the same day?

100In1Day is a global festival of citizen engagement happening again in Hamilton on Saturday, June 3, 2017. Pilot your idea to spark change on June 3rd and start your vision for a better city. Last year, more than 200 Hamiltonians led 170 urban actions - free for everyone to attend and participate in - all across the city.

SPN has got a lot going on this year for 100in1day happening on June 3rd.

Here is a list of events to attend

Hamilton Wayfinding: From midnight — 11:45 p.m. on June 3rd, 2017

The SPN is developing and posting wayfinding signs at various SoBi stations throughout the city. These signs will indicate the walk and cycle times from a SoBi station to a destination (e.g. Waterfront, Market, Ottawa St., Westdale Village, Concession St., etc.). Be on the lookout for these signs when you are walking by a SoBi station or going for a ride on a SoBi bike. The signage will help demonstrate how close it is to walk and ride to various destinations throughout Hamilton and encourage people to choose sustainable and healthy transportation options to get around! Take a photo of the wayfinding sign you see and post it to Twitter/Facebook with the hashtag #findyourwayham!

Bike Share as Art: From midnight — 11:45 p.m. on June 3rd, 2017

Bike share stations are public spaces and can be works of art unto themselves. They are natural gathering places and provide a public service for citizens. This installation attempts to improve the citizens interaction with bike share stations whether they are using the service or just walking by. Colourful spray chalk stencils will be used to enhance the on-street look and feel of the station.

We would like citizens to see public infrastructure as more than just utilitarian. They can be works of art unto themselves and bring a little joy or even awareness of social issues to one's day!

Drop by the Guise & James St N Sobi Station to see an Ode to 100in1 day art piece and think about ways that together we can create more vibrant public spaces!

These materials will be part of my intervention: spray chalk paint, stencils

Cycle by to enjoy the art and vibrancy in the public space!

Trees in Conversation: From midnight — 11:45 p.m. on June 3rd, 2017

Trees in Conversation aims to provoke thought and discussion around the purpose and the benefits of urban trees. Complete streets and the urban canopy are important concepts and they both integrate trees as an important element in the success of urban streets. They provide a buffer between pedestrians and traffic, shade for pedestrians, and make the street more supportive of small business. This intervention will involve call out bubbles placed on urban trees with fun and thought provoking statements on them to engage pedestrians walking by.

These materials will be part of my intervention: paper, string

Trees and Transportation: From midnight — 11:45 p.m. on June 3rd, 2017

Trees and Transportation aims to provoke thought and discussion around the purpose and the benefits of urban trees and the relationship between trees and sustainable transportation. Complete streets and the urban canopy are important concepts and they both integrate trees as an important element in the success of urban streets. They provide a buffer between pedestrians and traffic, offer shade and provide a place to sit and relax under. This intervention will involve call out bubbles placed on urban trees with fun and thought provoking statements on them to engage pedestrians walking by, cyclists riding by, and cyclists parking their bicycles.

These materials will be part of my intervention: paper, string

The Value of Trees: From midnight — 11:45 p.m. on June 3rd, 2017

The Value of Trees aims to provoke thought and discussion around the significant value and benefits of urban trees. Trees provide countless benefits including water flow regulation, shade, pollution filtration and more. Estimating these benefits in terms of economic value is one way to realize the significant value of trees.

This intervention will involve call out bubbles placed on urban trees with fun and thought provoking statements on them to engage visitors of the park.

Curating 100in1: From 11 a.m. — 3 p.m. on June 3rd, 2017

An intervention to celebrate 100in1 Day interventions and change makers! The Hamilton Sustainability Professionals Network (SPN) is working to promote 100in1day and educate community members about the day and how they can get involved. During past Spring James St N Artcrawls leading up to 100in1day the SPN set up a "100in1Photos" Photo Booth during parking space parties and community events at Artcrawl, asking people what they love about Hamilton, how they want to transform Hamilton, and what their urban intervention is (if they already have one!). Hundreds of photos were taken and the SPN created an art exhibit that Curates 100in1. On June 3 all of the photos will be on display at 294 James St N in SPN's continuing art exhibit!

It would be great if participants can bring with them: Come to 294 James St. N. and enjoy this and many other interventions!
